What Is a Shutdown? Understanding Neurodivergent Shutdowns

What Is a Shutdown?

Many neurodivergent people experience shutdowns, yet they’re often misunderstood by those around them. A shutdown isn’t someone being rude, ignoring others or choosing not to engage. Instead, it’s often a sign that the nervous system has become overwhelmed.

If you’d like a quick introduction to the topic, we’ve created a short video explaining neurodivergent shutdowns:

Understanding Neurodivergent Shutdown

When people hear the word “shutdown”, they sometimes imagine someone simply switching off or withdrawing from a situation. The reality is often much more complex.

For many autistic people, people with ADHD and other neurodivergent individuals, a shutdown can happen when the brain and body have reached their limit. Too much sensory information, emotional stress, social demands or ongoing pressure can leave the nervous system struggling to process any more input.

A shutdown isn’t a choice. It’s often a protective response to overwhelm.

What Does a Shutdown Feel Like?

Everyone’s experience is different, but many people describe feeling mentally and physically exhausted. Words may become harder to find, conversations can feel overwhelming and even simple decisions may suddenly require significant effort.

Some people feel the need to withdraw to a quiet space, while others notice they become unusually quiet or struggle to respond to questions. From the outside, this can sometimes be mistaken for disinterest or avoidance, but the person is simply trying to cope with an overloaded nervous system.

Why Do Shutdowns Happen?

Shutdowns can be triggered by many different experiences. For some people, sensory overload plays a major role. Bright lights, loud environments, busy schedules or unexpected changes can gradually build until the brain cannot comfortably process any more information.

For others, prolonged stress, masking, social expectations or emotional demands may contribute. Often, a shutdown isn’t caused by one single event but by the accumulation of many smaller pressures over time.

Supporting Yourself Through a Shutdown

When a shutdown happens, it can be helpful to reduce demands and allow yourself time to recover. Many people find that quiet environments, familiar routines and reduced sensory input help their nervous system settle.

Rather than forcing yourself to “push through”, it can be more helpful to recognise shutdowns as a signal that your brain and body need rest, support and understanding.

Learning to notice your own early signs of overwhelm can also make it easier to put supportive strategies in place before a shutdown develops.

A Neuro-Affirming Perspective

Experiencing shutdowns does not mean there is something wrong with you. For many neurodivergent people, shutdowns are a natural response to a world that can often feel overwhelming.

A neuro-affirming approach focuses on understanding these experiences without judgement. Instead of asking how someone can stop having shutdowns altogether, it encourages curiosity about what is causing the overwhelm and what support might help.

At Supportive Counselling Ltd, we offer neuro-affirming counselling for autistic and ADHD clients in York and across the UK through online, face-to-face and telephone counselling.

Kat is wonderful! We're so glad to have found her as she has been an incredible support to our teenage, AuDHD son who had been struggling with the pressure and overstimulation of secondary school, and then his first year of college. Kat's sessions have been transformational for him. The connection and psychological safety she's created for him (away from the familiarity of home) to release his thoughts, and the coping mechanisms she's equipped him with have enabled him to embrace his individuality and build his confidence to a level that makes me very emotional. His spark is coming back! We're so happy to see him laughing again and talking about his personal challenges without feeling suffocated by them. Another thing we're grateful for is Kat's wider family support and generosity with her time, providing statements for our son's EHCP review and PIP award appeals. We would recommend Kat in a heartbeat!
