Neuro‑Inclusive Counselling & Accessibility

Neuro‑Inclusive Counselling & Accessibility

At Supportive Counselling, neuro‑inclusion is not an add‑on it is central to how counselling is offered. Our work is entirely neuro‑affirming, shaped by lived experience of neurodivergence and a person‑centred foundation where you set the pace, choose the communication style, and your needs guide the structure.

We recognise that many neurodivergent people have spent years adapting themselves to environments that were not designed with them in mind. In counselling, there is no expectation to mask, perform, or fit into a neurotypical model of therapy.

Our neuro‑inclusive approach includes:

  • Clear, plain language on our website and in communication
  • A counselling process explained in advance, with predictability and transparency
  • Flexibility around pace, structure, and session style
  • Respect for different ways of thinking, processing, communicating, and expressing emotion.
  • An understanding of masking, burnout, sensory overload, and emotional intensity, including experiences such as Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria (RSD)

A neuro‑affirming counselling space

Where sessions take place in person, we aim to offer a space that is supportive of sensory and regulation needs. This may include:

  • No expectation of eye contact or sitting still
  • A calm, low‑stimulus environment
  • Choice of seating
  • Access to sensory or fidget tools
  • Freedom to move, stim, pause, or process silently

What we commonly support

Counselling may include support with:

  • Executive functioning challenges and time blindness
  • Sensory overwhelm and shutdown
  • Burnout linked to long‑term masking
  • Emotional regulation and intensit
  • Identity exploration, self‑understanding, and self‑compassion

We also recognise the role of interoception how the body senses internal signals such as hunger, fatigue, pain, and emotion and how this can differ for neurodivergent people. Our work honours that there is no “correct” way to experience your body, and we support you to understand and work with your own internal signals in a way that feels respectful and useful to you.

Accessibility and neuro‑inclusion are ongoing practices rather than fixed achievements. We continue to listen, reflect, and adapt our work.

If you have accessibility needs, questions about how counselling works, or would like to discuss whether this approach feels right for you, you are very welcome to get in touch.
