Art Therapy at Supportive Counselling offers a creative way to explore emotions, gain insight and express feelings when words are difficult

Sometimes words are not enough, and this is where art therapy at Supportive Counselling can be used in sessions. For many people, expressing emotions can feel overwhelming or even impossible. This is especially true for those who experience alexithymia, which describes difficulty identifying and articulating emotions. People with alexithymia often know they are feeling something, yet they struggle to put those feelings into words. As a result, this can lead to frustration or a sense of disconnection.

As a counsellor and psychotherapist, I believe there is always a way forward. Emotions are complex, but they are not unreachable. In addition, creativity can offer a powerful alternative when verbal expression feels out of reach. Art can become a language of its own, and it often allows feelings to surface in a gentler and more accessible way.

For example, in a recent session (shared with full permission), a client tried watercolour painting for the first time. The theme of our work was the New Year, which often brings reflection, hope and change. Through painting, they explored thoughts and emotions that words could not capture. A single brushstroke can hold meaning. A colour can reflect a mood. The act of creating can open doors to understanding.

Art Therapy at Supportive Counselling supports emotional expression, self-awareness and personal growth. It also offers a calming and grounding experience, which can be especially helpful for people who feel overwhelmed by traditional talk therapy. In addition, creative work can reduce pressure, allowing clients to express themselves freely without needing to find the right words.

How Art Therapy Supports Clients With Alexithymia

As someone who works closely with neurodivergent clients, I often support people who experience alexithymia, and art therapy can offer a meaningful alternative when verbal expression feels difficult
