General Questions

How do I know if I need counselling?

People often consider counselling when emotions like sadness, anxiety or overwhelm start to feel persistent or difficult to manage alone. It can also help during life changes such as loss, relationship difficulties or times of feeling stuck or unsure. Noticing shifts in behaviour, mood or motivation can be another sign that extra support might be helpful.

Counselling isn’t only for moments of crisis. Many people choose it as a space for reflection, personal growth and managing everyday stress. Life can be unpredictable, and having a supportive place to talk things through can make a meaningful difference.

What is Rewind Trauma Therapy?

Rewind Trauma Therapy is a gentle and effective approach used to reduce the impact of traumatic memories without requiring someone to talk about their experiences in detail. It is designed to stop unwanted recall, such as intrusive thoughts, flashbacks or nightmares, by helping the brain store the memory in a calmer, safer way.

The method was developed over 30 years ago by Dr David Muss and is recognised for its non‑intrusive nature. It is often used when someone wants trauma support but prefers not to revisit distressing events verbally. Many people experience significant improvements within a small number of sessions, and it can be used on its own or alongside counselling.

I need immediate help, or I am worried about someone, what do I do?

Supportive Counselling is not able to provide urgent or crisis support. If you or someone else is at immediate risk, it’s important to contact emergency services or reach out to organisations that offer crisis help. A list of useful resources is available, and you can find them here

What can I expect during the free consultation chat?

The free consultation chat is a gentle space to talk about what has brought you to consider counselling and what you’re hoping to get from support. It’s a chance to explore whether counselling feels right for you and to ask any questions at your own pace. There’s no pressure to make any decisions during the call, and you’re welcome to take time afterwards to think things over.

What happens in a counselling session?

A counselling session offers a calm and supportive space to talk about what you’re experiencing at a pace that feels comfortable. Sessions can include exploring thoughts, emotions and situations that feel important, with the aim of helping you understand yourself more clearly and feel more grounded. There is no expectation to prepare anything or talk about anything before you’re ready.

How does online counselling work?

Online counselling takes place through a secure, encrypted video link that starts at the time of your scheduled session. The same link is used for each appointment, and you can join from a phone, laptop, tablet or computer. Many people find it helpful to join a few minutes early to check their microphone and camera settings. Choosing a comfortable, private space can make the session feel calmer and more focused.

How many sessions will I need and how often?

The number of sessions varies from person to person, and the pace can be shaped around what feels manageable.

At Supportive Counselling Ltd, we are guided by the belief that you are the expert in your own life. Our work is therefore client‑led, meaning there is no expectation or pressure placed on you around the length or number of sessions. You decide when you feel ready to bring counselling to an end.

Sessions can be arranged on either a weekly or fortnightly basis, depending on what feels most supportive for you. Many people choose weekly or fortnightly appointments, as regular sessions can help maintain a steady sense of support and create space for reflection and meaningful progress. This can always be reviewed together over time to ensure the pace continues to feel right for you.

There is no fixed agenda or set number of sessions. When you feel ready to end, an ending session is usually offered. Ending sessions are an important part of the counselling process, providing an opportunity to reflect on the work you have done, acknowledge changes or learning, and bring the therapeutic relationship to a thoughtful and supportive close.

Sessions start and end at the agreed time, and arriving promptly helps you get the most from the space. If you’re unsure what frequency might suit you, you can book a free consultation to talk it through.

What do I do if I need to cancel?

If you need to cancel a session, it’s helpful to give as much notice as possible. Cancellations made more than 24 hours before the session time are not charged. When a cancellation is made with less than 24 hours’ notice, the full session fee still applies, as the time has been set aside for you.

If you need to make a change, have a question, or want to update your counsellor, you can get in touch here.

Will counselling with you be recorded in my medical history with my GP?

Counselling with Supportive Counselling is completely confidential, and information is not shared with a GP or added to medical records. The only exception would be if there were serious concerns about someone’s immediate safety or the safety of others. Even in those situations, any steps taken would be handled with care, transparency and as much involvement from you as possible.

If you’d like to talk things through or ask any questions before starting, you can make contact here.

An invoice is emailed the day before each session, and payment can be made by bank transfer. To keep everything running smoothly, payment is requested within 24 hours of the session time.
