About Me
Biography – Kat Scurr MBACP
Hello, my name is Kat, and I’m thrilled to introduce myself and share some of my journey. My diverse background spans working in school, graphic design, and beauty therapy, but it’s my rich life experiences that truly shaped my path to becoming a counsellor and psychotherapist. This blend of professional and personal experiences fuels my passion for helping others, and I am deeply committed to supporting my clients.
As well as my private practice I manage a charity counselling project, mentoring trainee counsellors and handling complex cases. With experience in both the NHS and charity sector, I’ve worked with a wide range of clients.
As a dedicated counsellor and psychotherapist, I approach my work with curiosity and attentiveness. I actively listen to my clients, often identifying insights they may not have recognised themselves. My goal is to support and guide clients in understanding the “how,” “why,” “what,” “when,” and “where” of their experiences. I liken this process to assembling a jigsaw puzzle—helping clients piece together their thoughts, emotions, and experiences to gain greater clarity and self-awareness. This passion for deep understanding is one of the reasons I specialise in trauma, particularly its long-term effects and its impact on the body.
As a mum to neurodivergence, I have a drive and dedication to this area, which has led me to immerse myself in learning and specialising in neurodivergence for over 20 years. In my work with neurodivergent clients, I often see the emotional impact of an adult diagnosis or self-discovery. One of the most profound aspects I support clients through is the grief that can emerge—not only in understanding who they are but also in processing the past, where they may have felt unheard, unsupported, or misunderstood. Navigating this grief is an essential part of their journey, allowing them to validate their experiences, heal, and move forward with self-compassion.
When I’m Not At Work
When I’m not counselling, I dedicate hundreds of hours each year to continued professional development as part of my ethical responsibilities as a counsellor and psychotherapist. I stay up to date with the latest mental health news and research through various courses and reading, and I also enjoy writing blogs for my website.
For my self-care, I love nothing more than relaxing with a good book in the sunshine. I also enjoy the challenge of growing organic vegetables and fruits, even with the unpredictable weather! Creativity has always been a cornerstone of my life and often finds its way into my counselling sessions, providing a unique way for clients to express their emotions. Being a mum keeps me busy and enriches my life with joy and activity.
I have a dog that I trained as an autism assistance dog. She started as a rescue puppy and was featured in a celebratory book by Dogs Trust.
My Approach
I believe everyone deserves to live a happy and fulfilling life. Through an integrative but mainly focussing on the humanistic, person-centred approach, I provide a safe and supportive space where you can talk freely, understand yourself better, and make positive changes. Each session is tailored to your unique needs, helping you realise your full potential. My sessions are organic and what you will get from me is compassion, validation and honesty. I work alongside you, offering support and providing a safe space throughout your journey.
Life can be unpredictable, but working together, you can choose how to respond to its challenges. My non-judgemental approach will help you find acceptance and reclaim your power of choice, giving you the tools to navigate whatever life brings your way with confidence and clarity.
